The Canadian Board for Harmonized Construction Codes (CBHCC) is inviting the public to participate in the winter 2025 public review of a proposed change to the 2020 edition of the National Building Code of Canada (NBC).

The proposed change included in this public review addresses overheating in new dwelling units. The purpose of this public review is to provide code users, the codes community, and the public with a detailed look at proposed technical changes, and seek comment on each proposed technical change as to whether it should be approved, altered or withdrawn.

The public review is an opportunity for all Canadians to participate in the code development process. Feedback on the proposed change will help shape the National Model Codes, which are adopted, with or without modifications, by the provincial or territorial authorities having jurisdiction over the regulation of construction of buildings and houses.

The public review will close at 11:59 p.m. PST on February 24, 2025, after which comments will no longer be accepted. The CBHCC decides which changes will be published in the next edition of the National Model Codes based on the recommendations of the code development committees.

All proposed changes recommended by code development committees and approved to proceed by the CBHCC are made available for a two-month public review period in both official languages. Public reviews are conducted up to three times per year.

Following the public review period, code development committees address all public comments and if they deem appropriate, will recommend the proposed changes to the CBHCC for approval. Once approved by the CBHCC, the changes will be published by the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) in the next revision or edition of the Codes.

Those interested in participating in the review can access the proposed change on the CBHCC’s website and provide feedback.
